Career counsellors can provide individual evaluations and career counselling. They can administer and interpret tests to evaluate abilities; teach job hunting strategies and skills; assist with resume preparation; and aid in the overall development of career plans.

Before meeting with a career counsellor there are some things you will want to ask yourself. These questions will assist you in finding the most appropriate person to help you meet your needs.

  • Ask yourself, what is your goal in seeing a career counsellor? What do you want to achieve? Are you looking for help with a resume or a coach for an interview? Or do you need some guidance in figuring out what it is you would like to do?
  • What kind of career counsellor do you need? Someone to help you make a career change or maybe you’re not sure what your needs are yet you feel unhappy in the job you’re in. You will want someone who has experience in working with people in your situation.
Once you have an idea of the type of services you need, feel free to meet and interview potential career counsellors before settling on one. It is not unreasonable to ask the following questions before making your decision:
  • Ask about the counsellor’s qualifications and training
  • Ask what methods they use to deal with your issues
  • Ask how many years of experience they have
  • What are their fees
The better you understand your needs and the more questions you ask potential career counsellors, the more likely you are to find the right person for you.
