Have you always wanted an original home designed just for you? If so an architect is who you need to hire. Architects can be involved in all phases of development, from the initial discussion through the construction process. In some cases, they provide pre-design services which could include conducting feasibility and environmental impact studies, selecting the actual site for the structure or specifying the design’s requirements. When designing buildings and other structures, the architect must take into consideration appearance, functionality, safety, cost and the needs of those who will be using the structure they are designing.
It is important to remember that when you hire an architect your home is essentially becoming somebody else’s job or project. You must try to leave your emotions at the door as you begin what will become a business relationship.
As a man’s home is his castle, selecting someone who understands your needs will be central to a smooth process. Be sure to interview several potential architects before making a decision. Ask each one you meet with if they are licensed, what experience they have in residential construction, how long they have been working in the neighborhood, the fee structure and for some references.
Follow through on checking the references. Drive by the references’ houses and look at them from the street. Contact the reference and ask them about their experience working with the architect. Did they get what they wanted? Did they have any problems? Your local Better Business Bureau will also be a good source to determine whether the architect you are selecting has had any complaints registered against him/her.
